The aim of this course is to develop an introductory understanding of approaches to practice-based learning, with a focus on experiential learning, and to plan clinical education learning experiences, develop strategies to foster a learning environment within the clinical setting and explore how teaching and learning can be enhanced in the clinical setting.
Practice based learning in the clinical setting: experiential learning, problem based learning, action learning and situated learning. Planning clinical education learning experiences: what is facilitation, role of the clinical educator, models of clinical education, entering the clinical environment, planning to meet learners’ needs, writing learning objectives, preparing a learning contract. Managing the clinical setting as a learning environment: defining clinical learning environments, building relationships, environment, facilitating knowledge, skill and attitude development, learning theory applied to practice based education, developing and implementing learning activities, ethical and professional competence. Learning and teaching in the clinical setting: effective communication and feedback, assessment in the clinical environment, reflection in practice, inter-professional education, strategies to enhance learning and manage challenging situations.
