To introduce students to the profession of laboratory medicine, the basic principles and procedures undertaken in a medical laboratory and the role of laboratory medicine in the health sector and the provision of health care.
The structure of the health care sector, the role of laboratory pathology and the diagnostic scientist. The relationship between pathologist, scientist and patient. Private and public health care systems. Laboratory accreditation, NPAAC, registration. State and federal responsibilities for health care delivery. Medico-legal requirements. Routine histological technique; quality control, errors, precision and accuracy; use of acids/bases, buffers, pH measurement in the laboratory; basis for red cell measurements, indices and application in disease, counting methods. Retrieval and critical analysis of information from various sources (internet, database, popular press), presentation of information.
