Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop an in-depth understanding of the dimensions of environment that impact on occupational performance, and ways of addressing these in occupational therapy practice.

Course content

In-depth exploration and analysis of the physical, interpersonal and cultural dimensions of environment and their impact on occupational performance within scenarios and implications for planning occupational therapy programs. Exploration of the occupational impact of respiratory conditions, arthritic conditions, affective disorders, cerebral palsy, and total hip replacement. Overview of occupational therapy and other approaches to the management of these conditions and associated needs. Principles and techniques for the application of universal access, assistive technology, environmental modifications to facilitate occupational performance. Principles and techniques to assess the environmental dimensions of a person’s home environment and recommend equipment and modifications to facilitate occupational performance. Communication with people with special needs, including the use of technology to facilitate communication, and positioning to enhance occupational performance. Application of occupational analysis to the development of graded occupational programs. Approaches to teamwork in practice.
