Course aim

The intent of the course is to develop students’ statistical skills and to enable students to solve practical problems using Minitab.

Course content

Overview of statistical methods, sampling, measurement, random and systematic variation, analysis of the sources of error in measurement processes, continuous and discrete probability models and their main features, the normal distribution, quality control, principles of experimental design, common experimental designs.

Inferential statistical procedures. Estimation and hypothesis testing including non-parametric methods. Relationships between two variables. Correlation, regression, chi-squared test and basic analysis of variance with laboratory based applications.

The software package Minitab is utilised for entering and managing data, describing data with graphical and numerical summaries and implementing the inferential statistics procedures identified above.
