The intent of the course is to develop students’ statistical skills and to enable students to solve practical problems using Minitab.
Overview of scientific methods, sampling, measurement, random and systematic variation, analysis of the sources of error in measurement processes, continuous and discrete probability models and their main features, the normal distribution, the binomial distribution, quality control, mean and range charts, p charts, design of quality control schemes , principles of experimental design, common experimental designs. A range of inferential statistics procedures including correlation, regression modelling, estimation and hypothesis testing using t-tests and their non-parametric alternatives, chi square test and basic analysis of variance with laboratory based applications. Using a software package (Minitab) for entering and managing data, describing data with graphical and numerical summaries and implementing the inferential statistics procedures identified above.
