Course aim

To develop in pre-service teachers a body of knowledge related to children learning mathematics in the early and primary years of schooling.

Course content

Children’s construction of mathematical understanding and their interaction with physical materials in a social context; research into children’s learning in mathematics; curriculum frameworks for mathematics; key ideas in the content strands of Number, Space, Measurement, Chance and Data, Patterns and Relationships; mathematical processes of problem solving, reasoning, communication, verifying, reflecting and applying; conducting mathematical learning experiences with a small group of children in a school setting and reflecting upon the implications of children’s responses.
