Course aim

To enable students to examine scholarly approaches to the study of tourism. To create for students an intellectual context in which to develop logical and creative solutions to real-world problems through observation, research and reflection.

Course content

Definitions and meanings; factors influencing demand for tourism; continuities in the history of travel and tourism; motivation for tourism; technology as a key factor in the evolution of travel and tourism; the roles of the public and private sectors in supplying tourism products; destination 'pull' factors; attraction characteristics; the destination life cycle concept; trends and issues.
