To familiarise students with the development of various styles of jazz from its inception to the present day. To allow students to study aspects of jazz music performance that consider the behaviour of musicians and audiences, and socio-economic factors that have impacted on the development of jazz.
Students will be introduced to the major jazz styles and periods through multi media and live demonstrations. The lectures will discuss African roots, early jazz, brass bands, blues, ragtime, swing, bebop, cool school, free jazz and subsequent eclectic fusion developments. Students will have the opportunity to analyse jazz performances, research and present on various jazz scenes, and/or perform jazz music.
