To introduce students to the fundamentals of Mechatronics and to enable students taking this course to identify and select the key elements of a mechatronic system.
Introducing mechatronics and its relevance to engineering design; examples of mechatronic systems. Elements of mechatronic systems, measurement systems, open and closed loop control, sequential control and behaviour control. Sensors, Transducers, Actuators, Drivers and Encoders performance characteristics and applications for mechatronic systems particularly in industrial as well as pseudo intelligent mobile robot.. Microprocessors and microcontrollers; principles and applications. Popular and industrial microcontrollers and C programming applications for mobile robots. Power supplies: types and applications for mobile and industrial robots. ; Storage batteries. Power amplification within the context of mechatronic systems. Mechanical aspects: Mechanics of rigid bodies (static and dynamics),free body diagrams (FBD) and reaction forces in 2D and 3D. Centre of gravity and centroid in 2D and 3D.Kinamatics considerations in trajectory design forward and reverse. Principles of industrial robots, robot operation. Programming robot operation and applications. Static and dynamic behaviour of mechatronic elements. Trajectory model for differential steering system of robot wheel actuators. . Object avoidance +path finding autonomous mobile robot design criteria.
