Group Work

Course aim

To enable students to analyse approaches to group work and to develop leadership and membership skills required for professional practice in the human services within a diverse range of groups and contexts.

Course content

The students will develop their understanding of different approaches to group work; group development,
group structures and processes and how group work theories inform their practice. The students will analyse leadership theory and skills, roles and responsibilities and will apply conflict management and conflict resolution strategies in groups and engage in reflective practice in group work as a group member and group facilitator. The students will apply a variety of group work knowledge across a range of diverse settings using group work approaches in various group contexts including case conferences, meetings, educational, mutual support and social groups. The students will evaluate the impact of culturallly and linguistically diverse members and leaders on the group dynamics.
