Course aim

To facilitate understanding of the services, architecture, operation and performance of modern telecommunication networks, and the related network engineering issues.

Course content

Evolution of telecommunication services, networks and technologies; Overview of Public Switched Telephone Network; Signalling concepts and technologies; Teletraffic engineering: basic concepts and simple models; Transport networks; Wireless and mobile network access: cellular, wireless personal, local and wide area network technologies; Infrastructure-less networking; Mobile Internet; Quality of Service; Network and Information Security.

EEET 3025 Computer Communications and Networks or equivalent basic computer communications course. Basics of discrete mathematics and probability theory e.g. components of MATH 2021 Engineering Mathematics 3E and MATH 2022 Engineering Mathematics 4E or equivalent. Basics of software systems (e.g. as in COMP 1015 Engineering Programming OR COMP 1041 Programming for Engineers).
