Course aim

To provide the student with an overview understanding of the state of Systems Thinking that indicates the scope and diversity of the field, its major paradigms and its historical development and future research directions. The understanding developed will enable students to know the nature and suitability of a representative range of systems investigation and intervention methodologies to enable selection of a suitable method for a particular problem.

Course content

General Systems Theory, Cybernetics, Complexity and Complex Adaptive System, Systems Dynamics, Hard Systems, Soft Systems, Soft Systems Methodology, Critical Systems, Cognitive Work Analysis, Heuristics, Total Systems Intervention, Systemic Intervention, Post-modern Theory and Systems Thinking, research directions in Systems Thinking, applying Systems Thinking to defence, applying Systems Thinking in engineering.
