Course aim

On completion of this course, students should be able to: 

  • Describe and interpret the key phases of urban planning in Australia, with specific reference to South Australia’s planning history 
  •  Describe and interpret the principal events in South Australia’s planning history 
  •  Identify and appreciate the key literature surrounding cultural heritage management, particularly that which is concerned with the built environment
  •  Demonstrate a critical understanding of policy dimensions of designating certain buildings and other cultural structures as items of heritage value

Course content

Planning as a social product. The way different cultures make landscapes and the place of planning in the production of landscapes. The international diffusion of planning ideas and ideologies. The development of planning as a regulatory activity in Australia and South Australia. The historical development of Adelaide as a ‘planned’ city and the evolution of its planning arrangements. Policy dimensions of heritage designation. Selective transformation of history into place specific heritage. Issues of power in the landscape with reference to heritage conservation and community opinion and action. Alternative perspectives on the purposes and subjects of planning history.
