Planning Heritage Workshop

Course aim

On completion of this course, students should be able to: 

• Appreciate the key phases of urban planning in Australia the 19th century 
• Describe and interpret the principal events in South Australia’s planning history 
• Understand the policy dimensions of designating certain buildings and other structures as items of heritage value 
• Demonstrate a critical understanding of the literatures pertaining to planning history and heritage.

Course content

Planning as a social product. The way different cultures make landscapes and the place of planning in the production of landscapes. The international diffusion of planning ideas and ideologies. The development of planning as a regulatory activity in Australia and South Australia. The historical development of Adelaide as a ‘planned’ city and the evolution of its planning arrangements. Policy dimensions of heritage designation. Selective transformation of history into place specific heritage. Issues of power in the landscape with reference to heritage conservation and community opinion and action. Alternative perspectives on the purposes and subjects of planning history.
