To demonstrate the physical principles used in the design and management of buildings to create environmentally suitable and sustainable conditions.
Psychrometry and thermal comfort. Admission and exclusion of solar radiation. Resultant temperature, design heat loss/gain, natural ventilation and thermal insulation. Thermal modelling software. Energy efficiency, life cycle energy concepts, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental considerations. Introduction to natural lighting design methods. Control of noise. Noise annoyance and the community. Water-efficient and water-resilient design. Relevant content of the National Construction Code, and of Green Star Design & As-built.
