Course aim

To familiarise students with the scientific and engineering properties, performance and use of materials and components in modern construction.

Course content

Classification of types of materials and their structure. Chemical, physical and mechanical properties of major construction materials and components. Cementitious based materials, ferrous and non ferrous components, ceramics and ceramic-like materials, natural organic and synthetic organics, sealants and other materials. On-site installation and fixing practices and their relationship with performance and avoidance of failure in buildings. Introduction to building pathology.
