Develop students’ knowledge of mathematics (multivariable calculus), statistics, and the mathematical software MATLAB, in the context of engineering problems, in both mechanical and civil engineering.
Module 1
Mathematics with MATLAB. Topics from (depending upon projects in Module 3): solutions of equations, multivariable calculus, curve fitting, optimization, formulation and solution of differential equations relating to engineering problems with analytical and software solutions.
Module 2
Statistical problem formulation. Graphical and numerical description of data sets. Probability models, confidence intervals, prediction and tolerance intervals, significance tests, statistical process control, linear regression, statistical software.
Module 3
Apply the mathematical principles and tools presented in Modules 1 and 2 to selected examples of modelling specific to each of the engineering discipline areas, including some of the following:
In the area of advanced manufacturing and mechanical engineering: conductive heat transfer, inventory management, position and motion analysis of mechanisms
In the area of minerals and civil engineering: fluid flow, structural analysis, continuum mechanics and stress analysis, discontinuity analysis, process modelling.
