The aim of this course is to undertake a comprehensive study of the anatomical structures of the head and neck and the structure and function of the human nervous system and to encourage the development of information literacy and clinical reasoning in the area of neuroscience.
Gross and surface anatomy of the head and neck, anatomy of the central nervous system, sensory system, motor system (motor control and motor learning), visual system, auditory and vestibular systems (postural control), association and speech areas, cranial nerves, Autonomic nervous system, CNS blood supply, cerebro-spinal fluid, development of the brain, clinical application of neurophysiology (physical and electrical properties of cells in the CNS, synapses, neuro-transmitters, neuromodulators), neuroplasticity, introduction to neuropathology (movement & sensory disorders, disorders of allied systems – speech and cognition), introduction to the assessment and management of disorders of the CNS, consideration of the effects of age on the nervous system.
