Course aim

To provide a broad understanding of digital photography and its historical, technical, and conceptual elements, whilst acquiring practical skills in digital image-making and editing.

Course content

The course is designed to (a) equip students with practical skills in digital image capture and establishing a digital workflow, and (b) increase student knowledge of, and critical appreciation for, photography as a fine art medium. Students will gain skills in using camera controls effectively; understanding exposure and measuring light; managing the digital darkroom (including skills in RAW file processing, smart object workflow, organising and storing digital files), and image editing using Adobe software (including skills in colour and tonal correction, retouching, working with layers, selections, and layer masks, and basic compositing). This is an intensive, hands-on, primarily studio-based course. No prior experience in photography or using Adobe software is required.
