Course aim

To develop students’ understanding of key themes, issues, and theories concerning gender, sexuality, and representation in visual culture and art.

Course content

This course introduces students to a variety of theories concerning gender, sexuality, and representation, with a focus on visual culture and art. Students will develop the ability to critically analyse and contextualise representations of gender and sexuality across a variety of media and art forms (including the visual arts, photography, film, television, advertising, performance, popular music, fashion, and digital cultures). Students will consider the ways in which cultural artefacts (and their curation) reinforce or challenge dominant beliefs about gender and sexuality. Topics include feminism, intersectionality, masculinities, sexuality, gender performativity, queer theory, transgender, and non-binary identities.
