To Introduce students to the key themes and discourses of film theory.
Topics covered in this course include: history and theory of film; film as art and as mass entertainment; connections between art and film; the characteristics of modern and postmodern film; changing models of filmic representation; the role of the spectator and theories of the gaze; reading film: semiotics, psychoanalytic theory and reader-response theory; mainstream and independent film.
