Arid Land Ecology and Management

Course aim

To provide students with specialist knowledge and skills of working in Australian arid and semi-arid ecosystems, and also a broad understanding of the historical, social and economic factors which determine current land use practices affecting these ecosystems.

Course content

The course will cover: cultural history & land uses (rangelands, mining, Aboriginal land, wilderness, reserves, tourism); ecology of arid lands in Australia and elsewhere (climate, soils, biota); management issues (feral animals, woody and herbaceous weeds, conservation of biodiversity, mining rehabilitation, Great Artesian Basin); practical skills (ecological experimental & survey techniques, uses of GIS & remote sensing, data analysis including multivariate statistics, report-writing).
