Course aim

To familiarise students with the major issues in the provision of readers’ advisory and leisure reading in school and public libraries for children, young adults, and adults.

Course content

Popular fiction for adults, adolescents, and children; understanding the reader; how texts reflect the society that produces them; social debates over what people should or should not read, and what is good literature; low versus high culture debates; readers’ advisory for adults, children, and young adults; book selection, annotations and reviews; programming for public and school libraries (i.e. book clubs, author talks, etc.), resource based learning; the librarian's professional responsibilities in regard to the provision of leisure reading materials.
