Course aim

To give students the skills to understand the major issues for the provision of readers' advisory and reading in schools and public libraries for adults, children, and young adults; including how to develop an inclusive, relevant and community focussed collection.

Course content

Fiction and nonfiction for adults, adolescents, and children in various formats (CDs, DVDs, e-books, print, audiobooks, etc.); understanding the reader; how different materials reflect the society that produces them; social debates over what people should or should not read, and what is good literature; low versus high culture debates; readers’ advisory for adults, children, and young adults; materials selection, annotations and reviews; and resource based learning; the librarian's professional responsibilities in regard to the provision of leisure reading materials; collection management of both physical and digital collections. Marketing, censorship, and intellectual property as it pertains to readers' advisory and readers, and the library collection.
