Course aim

To acquaint students with computer hardware and architecture, operating system theory and software, current operating systems, and multi-threaded environments, and network programming.

Course content

Computer hardware overview and system architecture. Microprocessors and assembly language. Operating system fundamentals, process protection, and inter-process communication. Multi-tasking, threads, and scheduling algorithms. Current OS comparison, and software security. Concurrency, locking, semaphores, monitors, and SMP systems. Virtual memory, swap space, and paging algorithms. Rotating disk media, physical and logical access, RAID, and journaling. Protection and security. OS and network systems programming, and open source software.
