Course aim

To introduce techniques used in web data management and databases, including XML, distributed databases, data warehouses, data mining and other special databases.

Course content

PRINCIPLES AND CONCEPTS OF TRANSACTION MANAGEMENT:- Transaction management and concurrency control in databases.
DISTRIBUTED DATABASE SYSTEMS:- Architecture; fragmentation and allocation; distributed transaction management; design of distributed databases, client-server architecture.
DATA WAREHOUSES:- Architecture, design and use of data warehouses, data mining techniques.
TEMPORAL DATABASES:- Transaction time and valid time, temporal query languages, implementation of temporal databases (attribute-versioning, tuple-versioning).
ACTIVE DATABASES: - Event-Condition-Action paradigm, database triggers, coupling modes, types of events.
DATA ON THE WEB: - Xquery, database support for XML-data.
