Course aim

To advance students’ understanding of space and place in the context of urban culture and their screen media representation.

Course content

This course explores how the relationship between cities and film has helped to define and articulate modern and postmodern urban cultures. This includes: the modern and postmodern city, consumption/consumerism, globalisation and cosmopolitanism. Perceptual and affective landscapes, ‘public/private’ boundaries, diversity and memory and nostalgia are also covered. ‘Public’ discourses and practices of social differentiation and control are debated to explore how power affects the everyday fabric of urban cultures. National cinemas and cities as specific sites of representation will be examined to unpack the everydayness of urban culture from a methodological perspective.
