To provide students with the opportunity to examine critically and in depth from a music and cultural studies perspective, the role and significance of contemporary music as an expression and vehicle of popular culture, identity and cultural belonging.
The historical development of popular music in Australia from post-second world war to the twenty-first century, including the influence of America, Britain, Asia and Australian Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander musical styles on the development of the Australian pop and rock music industry; the influence of new technologies on the creation of new styles and genres of Australian music; fan cultures, subcultures and music based youth cultures; the interplay of the music and media industries; transnational record companies versus independent 'home-grown' labels; the impact of new technologies upon music production, distribution and consumption; music festivals and live music.
