To examine critically and in depth from a music and cultural studies perspective, the role and significance of contemporary music as an expression and vehicle of popular culture, identity and cultural belonging.
Students will examine the historical development of popular music in Australia from the post-second world war period, into the twenty-first century. It considers the multiple influences of American, Britain, Asian and Australian Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander musical styles on the development of the Australian pop and rock music industry, as well as the impact of new technologies upon music production, distribution and consumption, including upon the relationship between transnational record companies versus independent 'home-grown' labels. A key part of the industry is the music consumer, and so the course also requires students to critically examine music fan cultures, subcultures and music based youth cultures, especially around key sites such as music festivals and live music venues.
