Japanese 1A

Course aim

To introduce students with little or no previous knowledge of Japanese to basic spoken and written Japanese and enhance their intercultural understanding through reflection on representations of contemporary Japanese culture and society.

Course content

Students will be introduced to the three Japanese writing systems, vocabulary and language structures related to the range of texts, themes and topics presented in the course. Students will become familiar with grammatical concepts with a focus on language in use, sociolinguistic knowledge integral to the range of introductory situations and tasks. Students will also be introduced to intercultural aspects of contemporary Japanese culture and society.
