To introduce students with little or no previous knowledge of Japanese to basic spoken and written Japanese and enhance their intercultural understanding through reflection on representations of contemporary Japanese culture and society.
Introduction to the three writing systems, vocabulary and language structures related to the range of texts, themes and topics covered; grammatical concepts with a focus on language in use; sociolinguistic knowledge integral to the range of situations and tasks covered in the language classes; intercultural aspects of contemporary Japanese culture and society relevant to the readings and projects covered.
