To provide students with an understanding and appreciation of contemporary journalism theory and practice.
Students will develop advanced knowledge of journalism theory and the rise of mass media. They will study theories of news and news values while examining the role of the working journalist in print, broadcast and online news. Students will be apprised of commercial pressures and the role of public broadcasting, community media and citizen journalism. Students will examine the decline of print and the concomitant rise of social media, and future directions.
