Course aim

To introduce students to the spectrum of competing influences and values which shape Design and Technology Education.

Course content

Technologies as: human-designed phenomena; as values-rich and non-neutral; and as power-attributing. Design as: intention-based; interactive mental and practical process; and as involving multiple strategies. Critique as necessary analytic and reflective practice in technological lifeworlds. Sustainability. Existing and emergent technologies. Educational challenges presented by economics, vocationalism and cultural stereotypes. Clarifying Design and Technology curriculum issues: equity; change, sustainability and futures; balancing generalist-specialist contestation; engaging with product-process interplay; balancing knowledge, skills and values; introduction to assessment variables; competing interests of curriculum stakeholders; identifying personal knowledge and potential.
