Course aim

To examine the theory and practice of hypnosis and develop an awareness of its application to the treatment of a variety of physical and psychological conditions.

Course content

The phenomena of hypnosis (physiological and psychological); definition of hypnosis; myths and misconceptions; communication with the unconscious (the cognitive sub-systems); suggestibility tests; correlates of hypnotisability and individual differences; measures of hypnotic susceptibility in clinical practice and experimental work; contemporary models and current research directions in hypnosis; applications of hypnosis in clinical and applied settings; induction methods, deepening and alerting; explaining hypnosis to the client, client preparation, establishing rapport, and managing resistance; contraindications; ethical considerations in the use of hypnosis; variables affecting response to hypnosis; the four stage model of hypnosis; laws and principles of suggestion; direct and indirect suggestions; forensic use of hypnosis; hypnosis and children; use of hypnosis in organisations.
