Course aim

To introduce students to the basic concepts of organic chemistry. To provide students with a wide experience in practical work related to the theory course.

Course content

Organic chemistry: terminology, isomerism, confirmations, reaction pathways, properties and reactions of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds. Stereochemistry. Properties and reactions of haloalkanes, alcohols and ethers, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids, amines, amino acids and proteins. Structure and properties of biopolymers. Spectroscopy and structure determination (infra-red, uv-vis, 1H n.m.r.). Aqueous equilibria; Buffers and acid-base indicators. Introductory d-block chemistry (redox states, complex formation, electronic structure) and its role in enzymes.
