To understand fundamentals of polymeric materials, to achieve perspectives of designing in plastics and composites, and to explore the potential of these advanced engineering materials.
Fundamentals of polymeric materials. Properties of plastics, material selection and use of manufacturer's databases. Design of injection moulding tooling, cavity design, runner and gating systems, cooling. Computer analysis of melt flow, warpage and shrinkage. Prediction of production rates and process economics. Selection of manufacturing processes, machinery and materials and the design of products to suit all of these. Thermoset materials, properties and manufacturing methods. Fibre orientation for changing modulus and strength properties of composite structures. Surface finishing for thermoset resins. Design of structures using anisotropic composite materials and laminates using manual and computer models.
