Course aim

To provide a practical background to the use of geographic information systems and basic surveying in the practice of civil engineering.

Course content

Unit 1: Working with Maps, Coordinate systems, projections, Concepts and principles of spatial analysis, Raster and vector data, Database systems, Familiarisation with GIS software (Arcview, ArcGIS and other extensions), Generation of GIS maps and outputs, Interpretation and analysis of GIS maps and tabular outputs using data from urban planning, transport planning, demography, environmental and Civil engineering studies.

Unit 2: Surveying instrumentation. Linear distance measurement. Differential levelling. Traversing. Areas and volumes. Route surveying. Engineering and construction surveying.
