This course aims to provide the student with an opportunity to undertake a research problem or to study a new area of fundamental or applied mathematics or statistics under the supervision of a mathematician or statistician. On completion of this course(s), the student who has undertaken a research problem will have gained experience in an area of mathematics or statistics that is at the forefront of research.
Students will undertake, individually or in a small group, a research project proposed by an identified supervisor.
Depending on the project scope and availability of the supervisor, a project may be undertaken entirely within this course or in conjunction with MATH 3013 Mathematics Project 2. Projects can be in the form of a small part of a larger research project currently being investigated by an academic, a self-contained, small research problem, a literature study to initiate a larger program of research, or an opportunity for the student to study an area of advanced mathematics or statistics not covered in the program curriculum, but which is of interest to the student and/or supervisor.
