Course aim

To develop students’ sound knowledge of the major events, factors and trends shaping the region and to examine critically why the Asia-Pacific region has emerged as the centre of gravity of global interdependence and also to discuss alternate future scenarios for the Asia-Pacific region.

Course content

The Asia Pacific region; Historical briefs; Broad regional developments and trends in trade, population, migration, bi-lateral and multi-lateral relations, regional security and arms race; The changing face of Asia-Pacific rim; Fast growth decades; The leading role of Japan in Asia’s industrialisation; modernisation and democratisation in East Asian capitalist and communist economies; The role of super powers; The rise of China and India; The role of APEC, ASEAN, ASEAN +3+3; Asia-Pacific Century?
