Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of urban transportation planning issues and to support independent critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities for managing demand for travel.

Course content

Students will develop knowledge of the operational characteristics and appropriate application of different transport modes and management systems, traffic calming techniques, the planning and design of public transit systems, transport network planning, and integrating transport and land use planning. Students will consider contemporary developments in transport technologies and strategies including the electrification of the motor vehicle fleet and the potential universal future uptake of autonomous vehicles. Students will gain skills in assessing transport requirements by analysing data, surveys and models, and identify potential environmental, economic and social effects through application in design solutions.
