To provide planning students with an advanced understanding of urban transportation planning issues that facilitates independent critical thinking and problem solving capabilities for managing demand for travel.
Comparison of transport modes. Transport energy. Transport, urban form and density. Travel demand management. Case studies of strategic planning and metropolitan transport planning in Australia and overseas. Local area traffic management and ‘traffic calming’. Environmentally sustainable transport. Planning and design of a public transport system, solving its operational requirements and developing appropriate strategies and policies to manage this. Data needs, surveys and models in appraising transport requirements. Assessing transport requirements of new residential areas. Considering the contribution of transport to a city’s quality of life.
