Course aim

To develop an understanding of the range of social issues relevant to the planning and management of urban and non-urban environments and how these issues are addressed by social policy

Course content

Understanding social policy and social planning. Planning to address social disadvantage in local communities. Sociological theories of difference: class, age, gender, ethnicity. Understating sustainable development and its relevance to planning theory and practice. Theories of the risk society, social capital and social inclusion. Power and urban government. Strategic planning and communicative planning as techniques of power.
