This course aims to provide students with a general sociological introduction and understanding of social and cultural difference(s) and the implications this has for planning/planners. The course will also act as a foundation for subsequent social/community planning courses – Social Planning Techniques and Analytic Methods for Planners, as well as help to prepare students to do Honours or Planning Projects with a sociological framework for analysis in the urban/regional planning program.
Identification and conceptualisation of social and cultural issues; the concepts of social justice, social capital and social inclusion; the construction of social and cultural issues of relevance to planning; planning for multiple publics; the role of social planning in resolving social and cultural problems.
