Course aim

On completion of this course, students should be able to explain the role of policy in the planning process, demonstrate an understanding of the nature of the South Australian planning system and the techniques used to evaluate policy

Course content

The nature of policy. The process of formulating planning policies. Metropolitan, regional and local planning strategies. Planning as a function of government at state and local levels. Area-based plans; integrated local area planning. Performance-based planning. The expression of policy. Planning policy implementation. The role of planning in the development of cities and regions: the rationales for contemporary strategic planning policy, current approaches to the regulation of urban and regional land use activities. Case studies of planning policy topics - residential policy; retailing; policy for industrial areas; rural policy, biodiversity and open space policy.
