Course aim

The aims of this course are to introduce students to the analysis and design of simple building structures according to relevant codes and regulations (Superstructure), and soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering (Substructure).

Course content

Superstructure

Structural design process, structural materials, loads, structural framing, design brief, steel purlins and girts, bolted and welded connections, shear and moment connection, straining actions in simple beam due point loads and uniform loads, steel beams, columns, portal frames, bracing and connections. Concrete mix design and concrete material, design capacity tables, composite materials, other structural materials, load paths.

Substructure

Introduction to geomechanics, subsoil investigation processes, landslides and slope stability management, ground problems, ground improvement, footing, road pavement.
