Course aim

The aims of this course are to introduce students to the analysis and design of simple building structures according to relevant codes and regulations (Superstructure), and soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering (Substructure).

Course content

Superstructure
Structural design process, structural materials, loads, structural framing, design brief, steel purlins and girts, steel pin-jointed trusses, reinforced concrete beams and slabs, steel beams, columns, portal frames, bracing and connections.
 
Substructure
Introduction to geomechanics, site investigation processes, landslides and stability management, ground problems, footings, ground improvement, road pavements.
