The aims of this course are to introduce students to the analysis and design of simple building structures according to relevant codes and regulations (Superstructure), and soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering (Substructure).
Superstructure
Structural design process, structural materials, loads, structural framing, design brief, steel purlins and girts, steel pin-jointed trusses, reinforced concrete beams and slabs, steel beams, columns, portal frames, bracing and connections.
Substructure
Introduction to soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, site investigation processes, expansive soils, design and maintenance of residential footings on expansive soils, collapsing and compressible soils, ground compaction and stabilisation, footing types, bearing capacity and settlement, slope stability and earth retaining structures.
