To familiarise students with some of the issues and processes of learning and teaching English as a Second Language; to develop an awareness of students own language situation in comparison to English and other languages, particularly other indigenous languages.
How children learn to speak their language; natural language learning and cognitive development; learning English as a second language; passive knowledge of a language versus an active knowledge; Australian languages: their distribution, status and chances of survival; future prospects of maintaining and reviving Australian languages; the place of Kriol and Torres Strait Creole in the Australian language paradigm.
