To develop student’s awareness and understanding of current practices in literacy acquisition and to explore the function of literacy in their own community.
Current theories of literacy acquisition including scaffolding, genre theory and critical literacy; developing an approach to reading which is supportive of students from non-English speaking backgrounds; understanding the reading process; criteria for examining and selecting texts; guiding principles for teaching meaningful reading to Indigenous students and the role of language and literacy in Indigenous contexts; an opportunity to extend students oracy and literacy skills in English.
