To introduce key issues in contemporary global societies and specifically to sociological concepts, knowledge and skills in order to provide an increased awareness of how these issues affect people as individuals, groups, states and societies.
An introduction to: cultural identity and transnational issues, citizenship, globalisation and its impact, multiculturalism, gender, sexuality, family, the nation-state, health, class, poverty and inequality, employment and social change, structures of power and the role of activism, media, the relationship between theory and practice.
